A beach week,
planned quietly.

Restaurants worth the drive. Family-friendly beach days. The unwritten rules of the island — and yes, the tide and fishing windows too. Written by people who live here.

  • Hand-picked restaurants. Hours, phones, direct links — not a top-10 list.
  • Dogs welcome, families too. Leash-season rules, dog-friendly patios, and the accesses that actually work with a pup.
  • Dawn tide & fishing brief. For the early risers — weather, UV, and when the water's moving.

Today on the island
Thursday, April 23
Fresh at dawn

A cool offshore breeze is holding morning humidity down — expect a crisp walk on the strand before 10, then steady sun the rest of the day. The ICW is glass until the afternoon sea breeze fills in, which makes now the window for paddleboards and kayaks. Low tide lines up right around sunset, so if you've been meaning to try a tide-pool walk on the east end, tonight is the night.

  • Best surf-fishing window: 6:10–7:45 AM, rising tide with light wind
  • Bridge traffic predictably heavy 10–11 AM and 4–5 PM
  • Sea turtle patrol season starts May 1 — fill your holes before you leave the sand

Bringing the dog?

The island is yours, leash in hand.

Holden Beach keeps dogs as part of the island — year-round access, with real summer timing rules. Know the schedule, pack the leash, and the rest is flat sand and patios that actually welcome a pup.

  • May 20 – Sep 10: dogs on the beach only 5 PM – 9 AM. Not allowed during daytime.
  • Rest of the year: dogs on the beach anytime — still on leash. West-end accesses are emptiest.
  • Always on a leash. Island-wide rule, on the beach and off. No voice-control exception.
  • Dog-friendly patios: Salty Dogs Cafe & Bark Bar, Provision Co., Betty's, Archibald's.

Food

Provision Company reopened after spring refit.

The dockside lunch spot in Southport is back on the schedule — hush puppies, blackened grouper, and the 20-minute drive that actually pays off.

Dog-friendly

Salty Dogs Cafe & Bark Bar open for the season.

The dog-forward spot on the causeway is running full menu plus water bowls and shade on the patio. Off-leash dog area out back reopens weekends starting May 1.

Rules

Turtle nesting lights-out starts May 1.

All beachfront lights facing the ocean must be off, shielded, or amber through October 31. Applies from the dune line out — renters, check your porch bulbs.

Hand-illustrated

Restaurants, mapped.

Sixteen spots around the island, drawn by hand — from the causeway cafés to the ICW seafood joints. A beach-access map and an on-the-water map are next.
